Droplet impacts on cold surfaces

چکیده
We study drop impact for the case where impacted surface is cooled below freezing temperature of liquid droplet. The found to affect spreading dynamics impacting drops and, thus, degree coverage. cooling leads arrest three-phase contact line, impeding droplet drastically reducing maximum diameter. Besides temperature, speed also an important parameter: higher speed, more spreads before arrest. Based on experimental observations impacts using two different liquids and substrates, we show a combination experiments one-dimensional model, that occurs when solid layer forms substrate: this reaches well-defined critical thickness. then devise simple model efficiently predicts diameter droplets impinging, at velocities, onto surfaces maintained temperatures point.

Simulating droplet motion on virtual leaf surfaces
A curvilinear thin film model is used to simulate the motion of droplets on a virtual leaf surface, with a view to better understand the retention of agricultural sprays on plants. The governing model, adapted from Roy et al. (2002 J. Fluid Mech. 454, 235-261 (doi:10.1017/S0022112001007133)) with the addition of a disjoining pressure term, describes the gravity- and curvature-driven flow of a s...
متن کاملWater droplet impact on elastic superhydrophobic surfaces
Water droplet impact on surfaces is a ubiquitous phenomenon in nature and industry, where the time of contact between droplet and surface influences the transfer of mass, momentum and energy. To manipulate and reduce the contact time of impacting droplets, previous publications report tailoring of surface microstructures that influence the droplet - surface interface. Here we show that surface ...
متن کاملOil droplet self-transportation on oleophobic surfaces
Directional liquid transportation is important for a variety of biological processes and technical applications. Although surface engineering through asymmetric chemical modification or geometrical patterning facilitates effective liquid manipulation and enables water droplet self-transportation on synthetic surfaces, self-transportation of oil droplets poses a major challenge because of their ...
متن کاملRebounding droplet-droplet collisions on superhydrophobic surfaces: from the phenomenon to droplet logic.
When water droplets impact each other while traveling on a superhydrophobic surface, we demonstrate that they are able to rebound like billiard balls. We present elementary Boolean logic operations and a flip-flop memory based on these rebounding water droplet collisions. Furthermore, bouncing or coalescence can be easily controlled by process parameters. Thus by the controlled coalescence of r...
متن کاملSupercooled Water Droplet Impacting Superhydrophobic Surfaces in the Presence of Cold Air Flow
In the present work, an investigation of stagnation flow imposed on a supercooled water drop in cold environmental conditions was carried out at various air velocities ranging from 0 (i.e., still air) to 10 m/s along with temperature spanning from −10 to −30 ◦C. The net effect of air flow on the impacting water droplet was investigated by controlling the droplet impact velocity to make it simil...
